Recently, the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) announced the list of award winners for the 2025 year on its official website. Professor Sun Kai from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) received the 2025 Outstanding Achievement Award for Contributions in Electronic Power Grid Technology. The award was given for his "contribution to building self-configured microgrids based on flexible power converters." This award is presented annually to one individual, and this marks the first time the award has been given to a Chinese scholar.

The Outstanding Achievement Award for Contributions in Electronic Power Grid Technology is an award established by the IEEE Power Electronics Society in 2024. It aims to recognize innovative individuals and researchers who have made outstanding contributions to the role of power electronics in the future grid.
About the Awardee:
Sun Kai is a tenured professor in EEA and the director of the Tsinghua University-Imperial College London Joint Research Center for Smart Power and Energy Systems. His main research areas include power electronics technology for new energy and microgrid systems, as well as artificial intelligence-based power electronics technology. He is currently serving as the vice-chair of the Asia-Pacific region for IEEE Power Electronics Society, chair of the China Member Committee of IEEE Power Electronics Society, director of the China Power Supply Society, chair of the International Exchange Committee of the China Power Supply Society, vice-chairman and secretary-general of the Comprehensive Energy Systems Special Committee of the China Industrial Energy Conservation and Clean Production Association, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Associate Editor of IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics, Deputy Editor of Electrical Engineering Journal, and Editorial Board Member of Chinese Journal of Electrical Engineering, CPSS TPEA, and Distributed Energy. His research achievements include the Ministry of Education’s Natural Science Award (2017), Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Award (2022), the Science and Technology Progress Award (2021) of China Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE), the Science and Technology Award (2024) of China Power Supply Society, the Power Innovation Award (2024) of China Electric Power Enterprise Federation, the Electrical Artificial Intelligence Best Technological Innovation Award (2024) of CSEE, Special Gold Medal at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions (2018), and IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics Prize Paper Award (2022). In 2019, he was elected an IET Fellow, and in November 2023, he was elected an IEEE Fellow. He has also been appointed as a distinguished lecturer for IEEE Power Electronics Society from 2021 to 2024 and has been invited to give keynote academic presentations at 17 global PELS chapters.
