From October 20 to 24, the 16th IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE 2024) was held in Phoenix, USA. ECCE is the premier international conference in the field of power electronics and electrical machines, co-hosted by the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) and the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS). The theme of this year's ECCE focused on advancing electrification technologies to address global energy challenges brought about by economic development and population growth. Faculty members Zheng Zedong, Sun Kai, Ji Shiqi from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA), Li Chi from the Energy Internet Innovation Research Institute, and 12 postdoctoral researchers and graduate students participated in the conference.

A total of 15 papers from EEA were accepted at the conference, including 6 oral presentations and 9 poster sessions. At various sub-sessions, Tsinghua faculty and students presented their latest research findings and engaged in extensive and in-depth discussions with scholars, students, and engineers from around the world in the fields of power electronics and electrical machines. In addition, Tsinghua faculty and students actively participated in activities organized by the IEEE Power Electronics Society, bringing back substantial gains. As an elected IEEE Fellow in 2024, Associate Professor Sun Kai was presented with his Fellow certificate at the conference’s award luncheon. Associate Professor Zheng Zedong attended the IEEE Power Electronics Society’s Motor, Drives, and Automation Technology Committee meeting. Ji Shiqi served as the session chair for the GaN Device Modeling sub-session. Postdoctoral researcher Qi Jingjing attended the Women in Engineering (WIE) meeting and received a WIE Travel Grant. Ph.D. student Xiao Yikang served as a conference volunteer. During the conference, Tsinghua alumni from both domestic and international locations organized social events. Associate Professor Zheng Zedong introduced the latest developments of the Department’s "One Department, Two Institutes, One Lab and One Alliance" and warmly invited alumni from home and abroad to visit and exchange ideas at their alma mater. The alumni discussed cutting-edge technologies, reminisced about their campus years, and further strengthened the connections and friendships between EEA alumni in China and abroad. At the conference, Professor Qu Ronghai from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, admitted in EEA as an undergraduate in 1988 and a master in 1993, received the 2024 IEEE IAS Outstanding Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions in the fields of magnetic field-modulated motors and wind turbines.
