The Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has recently selected four recipients of this year’s IEEE DEIS Graduate Fellowship from around the world, two of whom are doctoral students from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA), Tsinghua University, and they will each receive a USD 5,000 scholarship.
The IEEE DEIS Graduate Fellowship was established by the IEEE DEIS to provide assistance to graduate students worldwide working in fields related to electrical insulation and dielectric environments. Graduate students can be engaged in a wide range of research topics including insulating media, dielectric properties and breakdown, charge transport, and high voltage effects. The award is evaluated based on the innovative content of the graduate student’s topic, the impact of the chosen subject, and the graduate student’s ability to accomplish the goals during the award period. The winners of this award are selected by the members of the DEIS Education Committee. In the year 2022, 2 doctoral students Han Zhifei and Yang Mingcong from EEA received this award.
Han Zhifei
Han Zhifei’s project is “Online monitoring of insulator in electric field based on acoustic surface wave technology”, supervised by Prof. He Jinliang. Monitoring of insulator in electric field is important for fault monitoring and reliability improvement of power systems and equipment. This work proposes a new method for measuring electric field based on the acoustic surface wave technology, designs a miniature electric field sensor device based on the acoustic surface wave principle, and applies it to monitoring and fault diagnosis of insulator in electric field, which provides a new idea for the design and development of new intelligent insulators.
Yang Mingcong
Mingcong Yang’s project is “Identification and regulation of heterojunctions at the interface of high temperature polymers and inorganic oxides”, supervised by Associate Professor Li Qi. The performance of polymer dielectrics decreases significantly at high temperatures. This work proposes to understand the interfacial role of composite dielectrics based on the heterojunction concept in energy band theory, and to improve the high temperature adiabatic properties of composite dielectrics by modulating the heterojunction energy band bending structure to construct stable traps at the interface and inhibit carrier transport, thus providing a new idea for the study of composite dielectrics.
