The Chinese Language Programme running for Tsinghua Law Department Juris Master (LL.M.) students this term has two classes at two levels, Beginner Class and Upper-Intermediate Class.
The Beginner Class is aiming at the beginner learners who have no or a little previous Chinese knowledge. This class is aiming to help students to establish a basic understanding of the Chinese syntax and the basic system of Chinese characters; learning some key legal professional vocabulary will also be an important point. For Listening and Speaking, the topics cover greetings and university life. For Reading and Writing, students will be required to be able to write 100-150 characters and to recognize around 200 characters, which include important professional basic law terms.
The Upper-Intermediate Class aims at those students who have some previous knowledge of Chinese language. Teaching in these classes normally consists of two parts: 1, to study new words and grammatical structure that are associated with students' life in China; 2, to have substantial reading exercise and discussion about reading materials. Topics in the reading materials range from legal articles, social news and ancient Chinese philosophy. With respect to listening and speaking, the focus is to help students improve their understanding and expression capacity. In terms of reading and writing, the request is to submit an essay once a week, which is at least 200 words in length. This will help student enhance their formal language expression and writing and improve their understanding and interpreting to relevant legal materials.
